Protocol 04 · The Cold-Turkey Method
The practice of unaided conversation.
There is no app for this. There is no upgrade. The method is older than the disease, which is why it works. Below: four stages, plus a daily dosage card to keep on the refrigerator.
The Silence
Disconnect from all predictive models for 72 hours. Accept the discomfort of a blank page. If no words come, let the page stay blank. The brain is calibrating.
Hand to Paper
Physical pen usage slows the predictive mechanism to roughly twelve words per minute. This is the speed at which nuance grows. Write three sentences a day, by hand, to a real person.
Unprompted Speech
Speak before you have rehearsed. Notice the small failures — the wrong word, the stutter, the half-laugh. These are vital signs of an unmediated mind.
The Long Listen
Allow a silence to last four seconds longer than is comfortable. Notice what grows in the gap. This is where another person becomes possible.
Daily Dosage Card
Recommended administration: once per twenty-four hours, with food. Side effects may include: pauses in speech, social friction, and the appearance of an original thought.
Rx · Renewable
- 01Read ten pages of nineteenth-century literature to recalibrate sentence complexity.
- 02Argue, mildly, with a real person until both parties are slightly annoyed.
- 03Delete the “summarize” browser extension.
- 04Write a thank-you note that contains at least one strange specific detail.
- 05Tell someone what you actually think of the weather.
